Do your research
Research your Australian visa options and even reach out to an immigration specialist. There are many amazing companies set up to simplify the visa process and make it easy for you to find your pathway to Australian life.
Research your destination - consider potential employment opportunities, availability of accommodation, lifestyle and culture. If you know someone already here use them as a source of information.
Apply for your visa
Whether you are taking advantage of the awesome working holiday visa, applying for studies or a skilled visa; officially getting your legal status is exciting. Don’t rush your application, take your time and double-check your documents.
Start Budgeting
Moving countries can get expensive quickly so it is best to start planning ahead and saving for the inevitable moving costs and potential gap in employment. Plan to bring sufficient funds to support yourself until you find employment. Substantive set-up expenses include accommodation bonds, furniture and any additional training courses required make your qualifications valid here in Australia.
It is a good idea to have accommodation organised for the first few days after you arrive and email potential employers to make possible links before you leave.
Check your essential documents
Ensure that you have the correct documentation for your onward journey-
Current passport with at least 6 months validity. Most airlines will prohibit flight should you not adhere to this rule.
Birth certificate (useful form of identification but keep it safe!)
Appropriate visa – a permanent migrant visa, a visa with work rights or an overseas student visa are the most common types. Visit the Department of Immigration's Visa Finder webpage to find the visa most suitable for you.
Bring evidence of your qualifications, if any

Bring an up-to-date resume as this will save you time when you begin applying for jobs. Be prepared to have your qualifications assessed with the appropriate Australian authority or body before your qualifications are accepted.
Book a return flight
Having a return flight is a great way to protect yourself and your wallet should you need to return to Ireland on short notice. It is also a great money saver if and when you decide to leave Australia. Most airlines let you change the dates for a reasonable fee.
Travel insurance
Although Irish citizens in Australia benefit from the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement which entitles them to free emergency health care in Australia, it is still strongly recommended that you obtain comprehensive travel insurance which will cover all overseas medical costs, including medical repatriation/evacuation, repatriation of remains and legal costs. You should check any exclusions and ensure that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.
Get your tax file number
If your visa is approved, then you should apply for your tax file number. This is basically registering your identity with the Australian tax office and you need a unique number in order to secure a job. You can apply for this whilst overseas and the online application is simple.
Apply for jobs
Update your CV, reach out to employers and apply for jobs. Update your Linkedin and connect with Australian recruiters so you are on their radar ahead of your move.
Enrol in New Schools
If you are moving with family then you will want to apply for schools in advance, especially if you are planning to move to a city. Some cities can have competitive school entry requirements so research your first choices and reach out to the schools.
Book your temporary accomodation
It is always better to find more permanent accommodation once you land and can see the areas for yourself. So, I would recommend researching and booking temporary accommodation like airbnb, holiday lets or hostels for the first few weeks of your stay. The rental market in Australia has fluctuated and so you need to be sure before signing an agreement with a real estate agent.
Bulk order prescription medication
It’s best to have a few months supply of your medication to last your move and finding your new doctor.
Notify your current bank
Incase you spend on your current account whilst overseas, you should let them know you will be travelling so you are not blocked for suspected fraudulent activity.
